The University of Greifswald currently offers the only independent B.A. degree course in Finnish Studies [de] in Germany, which can also be individually combined with Scandinavian Studies [de].
A master's degree course (with linguistic, cultural, literary, and translation components) can be completed within the framework of the integrated Language Diversity degree course [de]. Finnish Studies can be studied both as a core subject (75 ECTS) and as a specialisation (30 ECTS). Students with no previous knowledge can study Finnish Studies in the master's degree course as a basic language course (30 ECTS).
With the founding of the first Finnish language department in Germany (1921) and the Department of Finnish Studies as it was known then, the University was a pioneer in establishing this field of research. However, the University's relations with Finland go back long before the year in which Greifswald's Finnish Studies were founded, which is partly due to the fact that Vorpommern and Finland were under Swedish rule. More about the history and significance of Finnish Studies [de].
The "current news" section [de] provides information on news & activities related to studying the Finnish language and culture.
The online archive [de] offers a selection of older articles on e.g. conferences, projects, cultural events, lectures, thesis defences, etc.
Greifswald's Finnish Studies collaborates closely with numerous national and international organisations in the areas of research and teaching, as well as in cultural education. Permanent cooperation partners include the Embassy of Finland [de], the Finnland-Institut, the Finnish National Agency for Education (EDUFI), the Deutsch-Finnische Gesellschaft [de], the Finnish Literature Society with its Literature Information Centre and the Embassy of Estonia.
