Distribution of the Finnish polarity items in a typological context

Postdoctoral research project:
Distribution of the Finnish polarity items in a typological context

Abstract

The term negative polarity (fi. kieltohakuisuus) refers to the fact that certain linguistic items do not fit into simple affirmative clauses. As for mitään ‘anything,’ Näin *mitään (~ jotain), cf. I saw *anything (~ something). As the Finnish term kieltohakuinen (‘of negative polarity,’ lit. “negation-seeking”) indicates, these items “seek their way” into the scope of negation or into other contexts, which are semantically or pragmatically related to negation, such as questions (Näitkö mitään? ‘Did you see anything?’).

Polarity sensitivity and especially the distribution of negative and positive polarity items (NPI, PPI) have gained a lot of attention in the semantic literature in several last decades, but for the Finnish language, mainly the lexicon of NPI verbs (Kiuru 1997) and the role of NPIs in negative constructions without an overt negator (Kotilainen 2007, Savijärvi 1977) have gained closer attention prior to the brief overview given in the Descriptive Grammar of Finnish (VISK § 1634–1644). By contrast, the whole distribution of the most frequent NPIs, like mikään ‘anything’ and kukaan ‘anyone,’ and the variation within the polarity lexicon with respect to the strength of the polarity sensitivity have been barely studied. Consequently, there are still no established Finnish equivalents for the most cited and further developed semantic generalizations about the common features of the NPI contexts: i. e. for downward-entailing (see Ladusaw 1979) and non-veridical contexts (see Giannakidou 1998).

The research on the linguistic polarity is largely dominated by English and other Indo-European languages, which makes the overall picture notably biased. Therefore, the goal of this project is not only to add into the knowledge on the Finnish polarity items’ system and their contextual behavior, but also to enrich the crosslinguistic discussion by questioning some common generalizations about NPIs and by bringing forward the perspective of a non-Indo-European language and the special insights a case language has to offer for this field of study.

Subthemes of the project:

  1. Distribution of the NPI indefinites with respect to the typological generalizations
  2. Usage variation of the Finnish polarity items in questions and conditionals
  3. Strength variation of the negative polarity in the Finnish polarity lexicon
  4. Multilayered nature of the negative scope: negative polarity and the partitive of negation

Suomen kielen polaarisuusainesten distribuutio typologisessa valossa

Tutkimuksen osakokonaisuudet:

  1. Kh-indefiniittien distribuutio suhteessa typologisiin yleistyksiin
  2. Polaarisuusainesten variaatio kysymys- ja ehtolauseissa
  3. Kieltohakuisuuden asteet suomen polaarisuusleksikossa
  4. Kiellon vaikutusalan monitasoisuus: kieltohakuisuus ja kieltopartitiivi
